Friends of the IDF

Last week, on February 8, the Brotherhood enjoyed an excellent and moving presentation by Richard Mahan, associate director of Friends of the Israeli Defense Forces’ Western Region.

The Israeli Defense Forces protect Israel. Richard explained how FIDF takes care of the soldiers. The range of programs and services that FIDF offers is impressive, doing everything from refurbishing barracks and setting up mobile synagogues and recreation centers, to visit injured soldiers in hospital, giving vacations to combat veterans, and providing homes for soldiers who themselves are orphaned, without a home to call their own.

Indeed, the group’s mission statement is

The FIDF initiates and helps support social, educational, cultural and recreational programs and facilities for the young men and women soldiers of Israel who defend the Jewish homeland. The FIDF also provides support for widows and orphans of fallen soldiers.

You can learn more about FIDF’s activities at www.israelsoldiers.org, and about the fundraising and other activities in the Western Region here.

We’d like to thank Richard for coming up from Los Angeles for our presentation, and also PTS’ Marc Belsky for organizing this wonderful evening.

Upcoming events:

Sunday, March 4: The Purim Carnival at PTS. This is one of Brotherhood’s biggest events of the year, and we’d love for you to help out. Please contact alan {at} zeichick {dot} org to sign up.

Sunday, March 18: March Madness Social Event. Watch for a separate post about that.

More about adult study sessions

Last Sunday's Pirke Avot study session with Rabbi Feder was fascinating, engaging -- and if you missed it, don't dispair! We have five more sessions scheduled with Rabbi Feder and Rabbi Etlinger, on February 11 and 25, and March 11, 18 and 28. These Sunday sessions begin at 9:30 am in Rabbi Feder's study.

The text for this study session is Pirke Avot: A Modern Commentary, by Olitsky and Kravitz. Brotherhood has ordered some copies, but you can also buy one yourself from Amazon or another bookstore.

Please note that although the Pirke Avot sessions are sponsored by Brotherhood, they're open to any PTS member, male or female. The more, the merrier, as we study Torah together in friendship.

Also note that there are some other adult study classes going on:

There's a course for PTS Preschool Parents, "The Family Narrative of Genesis," Wednesdays at 10:30 am. Everyone is welcome. Contact Cindy Common at the preschool for more details.

And Sholom Women are sponsoring "Women in the Bible," Thursdays at 10:30 am. Everyone is welcome to this class too. Contact Shari Carruthers for more details.
